The Truth About Lasers

Professional Laser Hair Removal FAQ’s For Men And Women

Laser hair removal, laser vein removal, skin tightening, photo facials… what does it all really mean? It may seem like there are spas, medi-spas, and doctor’s offices at every corner – how should you choose where to go? Or where to start? Perhaps the best way to look at it is: equipment + practitioner = outcome.
Lasers that treat hair removal

The TRUE LASER

The true laser is the best laser hair removal method but only by someone professionally trained to use them. The true laser uses light to target a specific chromophore or colored bodies in the tissue. The wavelength of the laser determines what chromophore is being targeted. The target of laser hair removal is melanin. Melanin is Lasers use a specific “wavelength that does not fluctuate” and “targets the specific chromophores”. Please see Dangers of Laser Hair Removal for more information about your safety.

IPL – intense pulsed light

The IPL machine uses intense pulse light that “fluctuates the wavelength” and “targets many different chromophores”. An experienced practitioner is extremely important with the use of IPL. Both can be used to treat hair removal and other skin conditions. Although in the laser industry there is much skepticism on the use of IPL for laser hair removal.
Finding The Right Hair & Skin Laser Professional
Laws Governing Laser Hair Removal Practitioners
Finding the right practitioner may be a little more difficult than you would expect. Word of mouth is very important, but just because someone has had good results doesn’t mean the practitioner was necessarily qualified. In the state of Florida, physicians, Electrologists, nurse practitioners and physicians assistants can perform laser treatments – no one else. The difference in their education, by law, is that physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants need only a laser in service. Electrologists must have 360 hours of training and take state boards in electrology, along with passing two state exams known as the Certified Clinical Electrologist (CCE) and the Certified Medical Electrologist (CME) – and attend a 30-hour laser course. There are many laws changing at this time to determine if a physician has to be on-site. Lasers and IPL’s are both considered practicing medicine. On June 4, 2006, the Board of Medicine stated the following, “The Board of Medicine and the Board of Nursing has taken the same position that ARNP’s and PA’s could use lasers for hair removal. It stated that the use of lasers for hair removal is the practice of medicine and the statute provides exemption to Electrologists. ARNP’s under protocols and PA’s under supervision can practice medicine.” The Laws governing lasers are rapidly changing in the State of Florida and it is imperative you investigate the laws prior to choosing a facility.

You should be aware many of the spas and dermatologists in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Palm Harbor, New Port Richey and other communities in the Tampa Bay area offer laser hair removal as a service but require you to purchase a package deal or hold you under contracts to return for other services you may not need or be interested in. This is generally the rule of thumb for these types of institutions but it is not necessary. I do not, nor will I ever, require my clients to purchase contract services or pressure sale them on services they do not need or want.
